“A Blended Family Christmas”

It’s Christmas Eve and soon Hank, his Dad Marty and I will be on our way to spend the evening and overnight at my sister Terry’s house in Schenectady.  Terry is not only my sister, she is my very dear and beloved friend.  Her two daughters are also two of my best friends, along with my “nephew-in-law” and my darling grand-neice.  I refer to this crew as my clan, and we are all very close.

Hank’s father and I have not spent Christmas Eve together since we ended our marriage many years ago.  Terry invited him to be with all of us this year because…well, because she wanted to, and because though Marty and I are not good at being married to each other, we are great at being Hank’s parents. Terry is great at being loving.

So off we’ll go to eat and open presents and be merry, and on Christmas day Marty and Hank will zip back to Marty’s house to have dinner with that side of Hank’s family.

I don’t want to give the impression that working out life in our blended family is always easy.  At first it felt more like a broken home and anything but blended.  And even today there are times when it can be complicated and breaths need to be taken while we negotiate the road.  But since Hank is the center piece and who this is all ultimately for, things always seem to work out just fine…and then some.  He is a beautiful and joy-filled glue.

So if you are a member of a blended family, or a traditional family that just keeps growing,  I hope that you can enjoy the fruits of all of your tentacles.  I wish you all a blessed holiday filled with love, peace and laughter.

And as this year comes to a close and a new one begins, I wish you the grace and fortitude to honor your family’s structure, however the architecture.  And I wish you faith to believe that no matter how it is designed or built, that it is family and so very worth sustaining.

Have a Merry Christmas everyone!
